The Reelwell Drilling Method (RDM) has successfully been field tested on Nabors Rig 97 for drilling  the 8 ¾" section of a shale gas production well at Shell Canada's Groundbirch field. The Reelwell method was used on various sections between 600 m and 4250 m MD using a 6 5/8" dual drill string. Both RDM and conventional drilling were utilized in the various bit runs.

The operation demonstrated that the RDM can give a competitive rate of penetration and performance compared to conventional drilling. Well control and switching between conventional drilling and RDM was proven. In addition several features of RDM have been demonstrated, such as hole cleaning, hydraulic WOB capability and possibility for improved formation evaluation from the cuttings.

The experiences gained from this well will be used to further improve the tool design and its operation envelope for Extended Reach Drilling.
